The Librarian (Socorro and Admin)

It was chilly day in the city of Milwaukie, the leaves turning from bright greens to the colors of autumn: brown, orange, red and purple. It was a sea of autumn with specks of dying summer. A gentle breeze swept the leaves up from the ground, flying up into the sky and going north. Laurel 'Laurie' Winters was heading to work at The Painted Lady Coffee House. She had been working there for nearly a year, building up money to go to college at Portland State University. Even though she was being paid generously, the money was also going to rent, food and gas, so the belt was tight for Laurie.

Her eyes landed on the familiar, gray brick building. The window had a sticker of coffee house's logo, an image of the owner in a pin-up style fashion, showing off a tattoo on her arm and with the name of the business right beneath her.

She pushed through the glass door, some workers ignoring her while others greeted her. She went to the back of the building where the break room was. She took off her sweater and put her purse away, making sure to hide it. She put on her apron and tied her hair up before going into the kitchen, a dozen of cupcakes already there, waiting for her to decorate them.

It was Michael's day off from the library, himself and a couple of friends had decided to hang out this morning before all of them headed to work. The tall men that were already at the coffee shop were all from the local rec center.

When he arrived his buddies called to him and he put up his hands in a defensive way apologizing for being late and that they should quiet down. After a bit he sat down and they all cheered and he slouched in a way that showed that he lost.

When the cheering had ended he got up to get something to drink. It was a but chilly out so he decided to get some coffee. Maybe black? No too strong for fall, he decided on a coffee with milk and sugar.

When he was done he headed back to the table and waited calmly.

By the time Laurie was finished with decorating the cupcakes, her apron and gloved hands were smeared with different colored frosting. The pulled off the gloves and tossed them into the trash and untied her apron and set it aside on an unused table in the back of the room. She then took the tray up to the front, opening the display case that was fairly warm. She neatly ordered the desserts on the top shelf.

Laurie went back to the kitchen and washed the tray before hanging it to try. She went into the bathroom and fixed her slightly unruly brown hair into a high ponytail and washed her hands. Just as she stepped out of the bathroom, one of Laurie's co-workers, Daisy, asked her to make a coffee with milk and sugar and to take it to table six.

She nodded and went to the coffee machine. She took a cardboard cup and poured the hot black coffee into the cup and mixed milk and sugar. Mixing it, putting a plastic black cover and placed it on a tray, Laurie took the receipt and went over to table six. There were more than two men at the table, which didn't surprise Laurie since she had seen them before. She went over to them with a relaxed smile. "Coffee with milk and sugar. For who is this for?"

Michael put up his hand meekily. "That would be me." He put his hand back down and his friends went back to whispering as usual. His friends were sometimes the rowdy bunch when Michael wasn't around. Even though they were rowdy they didn't flirt with the ladies too much.

"Thank you Miss. At least I hope it's Miss." He began using subtle flirts which he then backed up with a simple warm smile. He usually didn't flirt with the servers but this girl was pretty and seemed like his type of gal. She had that kind of air to her that gave him the impression of her intelligence and strong presence.

One of his pushed his shoulder lightly and he blushed a bit pretending to be naïve to his comments. It did have to habit to feel awkward after trying to flirt. The only time he had any real courage was when he was drinking, he of course wasn't a frequent drinker of the alcohol.
