What is an arch mage?
-a person who due to a combination of bloodline and environment, are granted an extremely high capacity for magical energy. While most mages have to rely on energy from the environment or an outside source to augment their powers.

How powerful is an arch mage?
-If an average mage is a diesel truck, an arch mage is a nuclear reactor on melt down.

Why are they rare?
-many people have potential to be arch mages, only 1 in every 200 survive past their first month alive, and half of those who do are horribly disfigured and damaged. They can't channel the energy and they burn up from the inside out. The few who do live have to be carefully trained.... or have their powers sealed.

Random notes
-all mages form grimoires. But arch mages actually get grimoires that find them and are legendary, each imbued with millennia of KNOWLEDGE. They also are all jackasses.

Alright, details on mage magic. All mages decelope magic based on what's called "mind sets" most commonly they're based if languages and what you associate with that language. English is generally brash and force full, leading to powers like shooting a rock over a mile, making something move faster, breaking things in half, cetera. Where as latin, an older and dead language has more power and thought behind it, as well as a lot of freedom in creation. Japanese is artful and quick, commonly casting dozens of spells in moments that work in sync.

The style of magic is also effected by the mages subconscious desires, and how they write in their grimoires. These who write in flowing cursive or kanji often have precision, English and Latin are rougher and more unsteady languages.
